I came into the program interested in writing for film and TV but quickly discovered a love for grip work as well. I love the heavy lifting, teamwork, and safety aspects of being an onset grip. I am a passionate and dedicated worker who always puts my best into everything I do and that is reflected in my work. I continue to practice my storytelling, striving to create films of my own. I am ecstatic to get on set and start building my reputation and be apart of the film industry here in Calgary.

Leah Messier

Initially, my goal was to be a film actor, and I didn’t have much interest in anything else. That was because I’d never tried anything else. I thought I wouldn’t like theatre acting, and I ended up loving it. I took a film class in high school, discovered directing, and I loved it. My discovery of my love of writing came in a slightly different form since I’ve been writing things my entire life. It just hadn’t occurred to me that the scenes I was acting out were ones that I’d written. All I knew was that I didn’t want to write a novel, so I thought I didn’t want to write long stories at all. Film school and my teachers recognizing my talent helped me see it myself and discover film writing. Creating is my passion, but writing is who I am. I aspire to be a writer/director, but mostly, I want to make things worth seeing whether I came up with it or not. I want to create in whatever way I can. I create authentic characters, even if they are the most ridiculous, non-sensical thing you’ve ever seen. They are dynamic and believe in what they say and do. It might not be normal, but they aren’t fake. I inject meaning and intention, in one way or another, into every decision. Poetry gave me a voice to be able to hear myself, and it’s the only place I never let myself lie. Life imitates art, and I am only able to understand my life through art. Throughout my entire life, I have loved storytelling in all of its forms. This love of stories that don’t belong to me has taught me to try and see things from someone else’s perspective, to live in someone else’s shoes for a second, minute or hour. The main way I’ve learned how to do that is through movies, books, spoken words and songs. Stories of every kind either make me feel less alone, give me a new perspective, teach me something or do all three. I want to make art for myself, but I want to share it because art should be seen. People should be seen. If I could help just one person feel seen or garner empathy from someone who had never seen something from that perspective, I would have done what I set out to do.

I grew up loving the art of films. I loved watching them but I always wanted to know about the process behind it. In high school I took part in the film studies program for 3 years, it ignited my passion to new levels. During this program I have found my home in Producing and first assistant directing. I love helping to lead and organize a team from the very beginning to the very end.

Ryan Navas

With a deep passion for storytelling and visual artistry, I am a dedicated and driven filmmaker currently having completed the SAIT Film and Video Production program. My primary focus is directing, where I thrive in bringing stories to life with a distinct vision, but I also have a strong passion for cinematography, editing, and even stepping in front of the camera as a performer. My journey into filmmaking began roughly at the age of six when my older brother introduced me to the magic of making home movies. That early spark led me to years of animation, both LEGO stop-motion and hand-drawn, before I eventually found my way back to live-action filmmaking. Now, as an experienced film student, I have embraced every opportunity to refine my craft, working on exciting projects, honing my technical skills, and building invaluable connections within the industry. Beyond school, I fuel my passion through freelance photography, videography, art and personal filmmaking projects. My goal is to bring compelling, visually striking stories to audiences while constantly evolving as a filmmaker and storyteller.

I am a passionate film editor and videographer with a deep interest in the storytelling potential of visual media. Currently a student, I am honing my skills through hands-on projects and academic coursework, with a strong focus on film editing, post-production processes, and cinematic techniques. I have worked on a variety of short films, music videos, and documentary-style projects, each of which has refined my technical abilities and creative instincts throughout my higher studies. With a solid foundation in editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve, I am adept at working through every stage of the post-production process—from cutting and arranging footage to color grading and sound design. My experience extends to both technical and artistic aspects of filmmaking, allowing me to transform raw footage into cohesive, engaging narratives that resonate with audiences. I am particularly drawn to the power of editing in shaping the emotional tone of a film, building tension, or enhancing a narrative’s pacing. Through my studies and projects, I’ve developed a keen eye for detail, as well as a strong ability to collaborate with directors and other team members to bring a shared vision to life. As I continue to grow in my field, I am always eager to learn new techniques, experiment with innovative methods of storytelling, and take on fresh challenges. I am excited about the future of filmmaking and am committed to developing my craft as a versatile, professional filmmaker.

Cesar Peralta

Born in Mexico and now based in Calgary, Cesar has always been passionate about storytelling. With 5 years of experience as a camera operator for live sports events, TV producer, and radio operator, his work in broadcast media has deepened his passion for immersive storytelling and effective communication. This drive led him to pursue a Film and Video Production diploma at SAIT. During his bachelor’s degree in Media and Communications, Cesar developed an interest in photography and post-production, quickly discovering how to express himself through the lens. His journey in the media industry took off when he became a TV camera operator at GRD Multimedia, a conglomerate owning news outlets, radio stations, magazines, and a TV station in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. There, he honed both social and practical skills transferable to film, such as staying calm during high-pressure moments in live television, making quick decisions on the spot, and leading a team of camera, audio, and graphics professionals in real-time. The experience taught him the importance of precision, as live TV demands perfect execution without the luxury of post-production or second chances. This environment sharpened his eye for composition and framing. As the years went by, Cesar gained recognition among his peers. He expanded his role, applying his mass media knowledge to manage social media accounts for journalists, coordinate news programming, write reports, and even host his own radio show, ""Puro Rock"" (or ""All About Rock"" in English). Seeking new challenges, Cesar moved to Calgary, a rising hub for filmmaking in North America, to pursue a career in Film and TV. He looks forward to bringing a fresh perspective, backed by his diverse experience, to the thriving filmmaking landscape in Canada.

Addison Petrie

Hey, I’m Addison Petrie. I worked in radio broadcasting before deciding to go back to school and dive into another passion: film and video production. It’s tough to narrow down what I love most about it because I enjoy it all! Whether I’m behind the camera, in the editing suite piecing things together, or flying the drone for some killer aerial shots, I love doing and learning about all things film. Moving forward, I’m excited to keep working with clients in the corporate, documentary, and commercial space, while still carving out time for more dramatic, story-driven projects whenever I can.

Throughout my journey in filmmaking, I have cultivated a deep passion for capturing compelling stories through the lens of the camera. With a focus on cinematography and lighting, I strive to create visually immersive experiences that enhance the emotional depth of every project I work on. My experiences range from working on short films, documentaries, and music videos to hands-on training with lighting techniques that bring scenes to life in ways that speak to the heart of the narrative. As a filmmaker, I have always believed in the importance of hard work, dedication, and the pursuit of perfection. Whether it’s experimenting with lighting setups or working with a team to execute a vision, I approach every challenge with persistence and enthusiasm, knowing that great cinema is born from collaboration and meticulous attention to detail.
